Black brushing and subtle gold
A fresh addition to David Guez’s palette is the almost monochromatic compositions on a white background. Spiritual Landscape 46 perfectly exemplifies this approach in a vertical composition, with its mostly black brushing and subtle gold content dominating the right side of the painting. Though the artwork format is vertical, the paint traces are visibly horizontal, establishing symbolic stratigraphic correlations: the gold can only be retrieved with a certain effort from nature, and similarly, the spiritual correspondent can be retrieved from within without effort.

Monumental, quite and elegant
In the piece Monaco - Gold on Black, the gold is spread gesturally from bottom to top, defying the horizontal monochrome brushing. The gold in this composition seems frozen yet it somehow threatens to disappear unless the viewer’s eye fixes it in their own mind. Monumental, quiet, and elegant, the composition was given a central place in the JD Art Gallery’s booth, being in a harmonious dialogue with all other works in the Saint Tropez exhibition.
